Valley of Marecchia
Montefeltro
The current village of Maiolo, located in the middle valley of the Marecchia river, is a scattered mountain municipality that has taken the place, inheriting its name, of the nearby village of the same name, destroyed, according to a legend shrouded in an aura of mystery, in a night at the end of May 1700 from a ruinous landslide that still intrigues geologists and historians. Of the ancient town today only two mighty polygonal towers remain on the top of the mountain, from which the whole Marecchia valley is dominated, while the present town is in a nearby locality called Serra. Today Maiolo preserves its hamlets, its old peasant houses, the squares and has not allowed itself to be infected by the wild condominium building. The dazzling beauty of the sunsets, the gaze that sweeps from Monte Fumaiolo to Alpe della Luna, Monte Carpegna, the San Leo towers, the towers of San Marino to the sea, make Maiolo a unique observation point of the Marche region and of Montefeltro. The city is famous above all for its characteristic bread, produced with local flours and with traditional methods, to which a special annual fair is dedicated at the end of June, the Bread Festival. The event, which takes place over two days, is dedicated to the main product of Italian tables. A trip to the ancient ovens is planned to learn about lost traditions and flavors. A large museum is also dedicated to bread, with about fifty ovens scattered throughout the area dating back to the early nineteenth century, about ten of which are active and functioning for ancient and traditional bread-making, witnesses of the local peasant culture. The country still has its borgate, its old country houses, and its squares, and it is famous for the historic Rocca di Maioletto, from which a spectacular view can be seen.
