In 1462, the Duke of Urbino Federico da Montefeltro commissioned the Sienese military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build a mighty fortress, which was destroyed in 1865. It was one of the oldest fortresses in the Duchy of Urbino. The imposing crenellated castle that dominates the town with its high tower is the result of an almost total reconstruction carried out in 1865 by the Petrangolini family.
