Parish of Santa Maria Assunta
The Pieve di San Leo can be metaphorically represented as a ship stranded on a rock, a stone ship forever anchored to the rock that supports it and of which it is composed. The building is in fact placed astride a rocky protuberance of the leontine boulder so that, respectively to the east and to the west, there is space for two rooms below the aisles: the crypt or confessional and the so-called Sacello di San Leone which bears the traces of a sort of apse dug directly into the rock, which is accessed by an external door near the façade. Still today the Pieve is still one of the most fascinating medieval monuments in central Italy: together with the adjacent Duomo and the bell tower it forms a real 'field of miracles'.
