Sanctuary Madonna di Saiano
The sanctuary stands on a rock spur (260 m) on the left margin of the Marecchia river, in a strategic position between Montebello, Pietracuta, Verucchio and San Marino. Its name takes us back to the ancient Romans who called it "Saxum Jani - Sasso di Giano" and probably there must have been a pagan temple dedicated to him. The most important part of the complex is the Church, a place of pilgrimage and a place of prayer that seems to have been around since 1300. In 1356, there is talk of a sacred place where the Madonna of Saiano is guarded, venerated and celebrated every year. A document from a bishop around 1570 highlights that "Saiano boasts not an ancient but an ancient Marian tradition!". Inside the church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, there is a plaster statue of the Madonna (16th century) placed in the high altar with the child seated on his lap, almost in the act of wanting to separate from his mother to come from us his brothers.
